“Assess the main reasons for the Unification of Germany in 1871”

In 1862, Bismarck said that ‘the extraordinary inquiries of the day will be settled by blood and iron. ’ Although there is without a doubt some level of precision in this announcement, the most significant explanation behind the unification of Germany, which finished ‘the extraordinary inquiries of the day,’ was ‘coal and iron. ’ This is a statement from British financial analyst John Maynard Keynes, who contended that the modern and monetary planning before the wars, which joined Germany, were increasingly significant. This is on the grounds that the monetary quality made by the fast industrialisation empowered the formation of an amazing Prussia. It was under this incredible Prussia, with some skilful discretion and advantage, that Germany was effectively joined in the wars of German Unification. Without such financial turn of events and thriving, it is sketchy whether Germany would have been joined by 1871. Then again we should likewise think about different variables and in this way should address five key territories. The first of these is the becoming stronger of Prussia comparable to Austria and firmly connected to this is the financial improvements inside Prussia. On an a lot bigger scope we should likewise consider the quality of patriotism and the global circumstance of the 1860s. Finally, we should consider whether the approaches and procedures of Otto Von Bismarck, the Minister-President of Prussia from 1862 majorly affected the Unification of Germany in 1871, by and by we are legitimized by saying that the primary explanation behind the unification of Germany in 1871 was because of the financial ability of Prussia according to other remote countries, for example, Austria.â€Å"When the military has been brought into such a state as to deserve admiration, at that point I will accept the principal open door to pronounce war on Austria, burst in two the German Confederation, bring the center and littler states int o oppression and give Germany a national association under Prussian initiative. † These perspectives plainly voiced out the drawn out aspirations that Bismarck had for Prussia. Bismarck accepted that he had the option to shape the nation and steer it to a position where it would lead the other German states. Bismarck’s abuses from the above proclamation shows that he extraordinarily affected the unification of Germany. He understood that a †man couldn't make the current of events† however â€Å"only buoy and steer it†, it was here that his actual potential as a magnetic legislator could be seen. As the splendid pioneer he might have been, he totally outflanked the Austrians. Bismarck figured out how to develop a cozy relationship with Russia against Austria in 1863. This was made conceivable because of the Austrian’s blunder of not going to the guide of the Russians during the Crimean War in 1852 along these lines an Austro-Russian union 10 year s after the fact would be probably not going to shape as there was as yet incredible hatred between the two nations. Also it implied that Prussia would have a more noteworthy power backing them up. The next year he debilitates Austria further subsequent to aligning with them, as they had to keep up a military in the Northern area of Schleswig-Holstein. It is obvious to see from this that Bismarck tended to pick a fight with the resistance and make strain underneath the surface. On the off chance that Austria didn't prepare a military there Prussia would have been allowed to add this state and extraordinarily increment the quantity of assets and domain gained. On the other hand as this at last empowered triumph at Koniggratz to be considerably more attainable as less Austrian soldiers were available to protect their country. In 1865 he again obstructed Austria from making a likely partner with France by giving them prizes as far as land and assets. This would likewise guarantee that Fr ance would stay impartial if Prussia announced war on Austria. His next definite stroke of vital virtuoso can be seen with the Italian coalition in 1866. By the partnership with Italy, Bismarck invented to occupy some portion of the Austrian powers toward the south. This advantage with expansion with that of Prussia’s modernized armed force discipline brought about a Prussian triumph on August 23rd 1866. Its triumph empowered the North German Confederation to be framed. We can see that Bismarck held extraordinary political ability and having considered the move he made, we are advocated in saying that Bismarck’s job in the unification of Germany was a significant factor yet not the primary explanation behind Germany’s unification in 1871. Another factor which must be considered is the certainty of Prussia’s ascend to influence and her military’s exponential development in power. In 1815 unbeknown to Prussia, the significant powers in the wake of crus hing Napoleon split the French Empire and gave the Kingdom of Westphalia to Prussia imagining that it was pointless piece of land anyway truly they were giving over the most extravagant material stores in Europe. The bountiful saves when they were found were being separated a disturbing rate changing Prussia, right now a nation shy of an area and influence into the most predominant and most extravagant country in the entire of Europe. Helmuth von Moltke dependent on this freshly discovered riches gave him the methods by which to modernize the army.Bismarck enormously pushed the help as he accepted that â€Å"It isn't by discourses and dominant part that the incredible inquiries within recent memory are concluded, it is by blood and iron†. The recently changed Prussian armed force reformed by Moltke â€Å"attained a degree of military proficiency that the other European militaries could just dream of† This quality was vital during the three was of unification as it perm itted Bismarck to direct the fight just as the accompanying bargains and understandings. Its feature came be that as it may, at the Battle of Koniggratz where the Prussian armed force vanquished Austrian powers incurring numerous casualties.Indeed it was Bismarck who drove the military changes and it likewise shows that he postponed doing battle with Austria to ensure triumph was determined anyway without the overwhelming economy which Prussia had she could always have been unable to modernize the military to such a degree too deal with the expenses of three wars so we are advocated saying that Prussian economy was more compelling to the unification of Germany than the military anyway we should likewise recollect that without a solid military power Prussia would not have had the option to win the wars that guaranteed the unification of Germany to take place. It was not just the rich mineral saves that were monetarily profiting Prussia. The making of the zollverein in 1834 was the ini tial move towards a unified German traditions association, front fronted by Prussia. In spite of the fact that the littler states extraordinarily profited by being a piece of the Zollverein because of the abolishment of interior levies and they additionally got dependant on Prussia in keeping up the system. As well as this it might have not affected unification as its financial advantages concentrated nations on the inside advantages as opposed to driving them to converge into a solitary German state however surely by giving Germany a personality, and a shared trait with respect to organizations and the economy. It was viewed as â€Å"binding together the appendages of Germany†. This idea was re-authorized with the advancement of railroads all through the Zollverein. This made vehicle and exchange a lot simpler yet in addition united the states as individuals could undoubtedly traverse it visiting areas already inaccessible.Compared to the effect of Bismarck anyway the monetar y favorable circumstances of Prussia assume a significant job in the unification of Germany in 1871. The monetary focal points were improved as â€Å"Austria had not just had numerous ceaseless money related issues, it likewise lingered well behind Prussia in financial turns of events. It clear to see that without the financial force Prussia had during the 1850s and later, numerous organizations and the military would not have had the option to become modernized and a lot more grounded. It was simply because of this recently made battling power that Prussia was fit for dispensing the devastating destruction at Koniggratz. However it additionally helped Prussia to politically impact and overwhelm the other littler German states just as become a significant definitive country inside Europe. Therefore it very well may be defended that â€Å"coal and iron† was the most significant explanation behind the unification of Germany in 1871. Equal with the monetary advancements were the global conditions of the 1860s which assumed a job in the unification of Germany. Austria’s choice to stay impartial during the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856 implied that that they lost the help of Russia later on .Because of this nobody could no longer keep on directing over Prussia. Just as this, the Austro-Franco war of 1859 to 1860 prompted the Italian Unification. This had two significant effects on the unification of Germany. The first was that it developed and prodded patriotism in encompassing European nations. It even prompted a weight bunch being set up in Prussia that year. Progressively applicable to Prussia’s strength anyway was the Austrian loss of Lombardy. Because of this loss of an exceptionally rich express, the Austrian government had to make protected concessions to the dissidents inside the country. Also the seeds of war among Prussia and Austria had been planted after Olmutz where Prussia had to state that the Erfurt Union won't be made and that t he Diet under Austrian administration will remain likewise Prussia needed to right off the bat retire totally while Austria will also incompletely ground. This was an incredible mortification for the Prussians and the hatred made by this made the pressures between the two countries rise. The last worldwide factor is that of Napoleon III. In an offer to copy his uncle he connected with himself with universal legislative issues as much as he could.Napoleon met Bismarck at Barritz where he affirmed French lack of bias, as a byproduct of land rewards. This had an extraordinary effect as

Also, the vast majority of these African originated from various clans and correspondence was hard among themselves. This was another defect of the African slaves. Summer and College Admissions Essays

Summer and College Admissions Essays June 7, 2013 For rising high school seniors, summer is the time to be writing your college admissions essays. For rising high school seniors, summer is the ideal time to be writing your college admissions essays. Whys that? Because school is out, you have some more free time (though you shouldnt just be writing your college admissions essays over the summer as you should be very involved in an activity or job, etc.), and why wait until youre inundated with school work in the fall? When school starts up again, youll have exams to study for, papers to write, other activities to go to, and you just wont have the necessary time to devote to getting your college admissions essays out of the way. So why not accomplish this important task over the summer between junior and senior year of high school? It makes sense, doesnt it? After a summer day, take a seat at your computer and get started on the Common App. Write your personal statement. You dont have to start writing right away. In fact, you shouldnt. You should spend quite a bit of time brainstorming your essay choice as your essay choice is of pivotal importance. Theres no sense spending the time to write lots of words on a topic that just isnt going to cut it. As an example, writing about sports rarely cuts it. Its trite. So many college applicants write about sports. You want to differentiate yourself in the highly selective college admissions process, dont you? If so, then dont write about that winning goal you kicked in a soccer game. Because nobody cares but you. And maybe your parents. Maybe. So start brainstorming. Start thinking about what you want to write about. Start thinking about your voice and what makes you unique. Start thinking about how you wish to portray yourself to college admissions counselors. Now is the time. Not in September. And certainly not at the deadline!

Bering Strait - Geographic Overview

The Bering Land Bridge, also known as the Bering Strait, was a land bridge connecting present-day eastern Siberia and the United States state of Alaska during Earths historic ice ages. For reference, Beringia is another name used to describe the Bering Land Bridge and it was coined in the mid-20th century by Eric Hulten, a Swedish botanist, who was studying plants in Alaska and northeastern Siberia. At the time of his study, he began using the word Beringia as a geographic description of the area. Beringia was about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) north to south at its widest point and was present at different times during the Pleistocene Epochs ice ages from 2.5 million to 12,000 years before the present (BP). It is significant to the study of geography because it is believed that humans migrated from the Asian continent to North America via the Bering Land Bridge during the last glaciation about 13,000-10,000 years BP. Much of what we know about the Bering Land Bridge today aside from its physical presence comes from biogeographical data showing connections between species on the Asian and North American continents. For example, there is evidence that saber tooth cats, woolly mammoths, various ungulates, and plants were on both continents around the last ice age and there would have been little way for them to appear on both without the presence of a land bridge. In addition, modern technology has been able to use this biogeographical evidence, as well as modeling of climate, sea levels, and mapping of the sea floor between present-day Siberia and Alaska to visually depict the Bering Land Bridge. Formation and Climate During the ice ages of the Pleistocene Epoch, global sea levels fell significantly in many areas around the world as the Earths water and precipitation became frozen in large continental ice sheets and glaciers. As these ice sheets and glaciers grew, global sea levels fell and in several places across the planet different land bridges became exposed. The Bering Land Bridge between eastern Siberia and Alaska was one of these. The Bering Land Bridge is believed to have existed through numerous ice ages -- from earlier ones around 35,000 years ago to more recent ice ages around 22,000-7,000 years ago. Most recently, it is believed that the strait between Siberia and Alaska became dry land about 15,500 years before the present, but by 6,000 years before the present, the strait was again closed due to a warming climate and rising sea levels. During the latter period, the coastlines of eastern Siberia and Alaska developed roughly the same shapes they have today. During the time of the Bering Land Bridge, it should be noted that the area between Siberia and Alaska was not glaciated like the surrounding continents because snowfall was very light in the region. This is because the wind blowing into the area from the Pacific Ocean lost its moisture before reaching Beringia when it was forced to rise over the Alaska Range in central Alaska. However, because of its very high latitude, the region would have had a similar cold and harsh climate as is in northwestern Alaska and eastern Siberia today. Flora and Fauna Because the Bering Land Bridge was not glaciated and precipitation was light, grasslands were most common on the Bering Land Bridge itself and for hundreds of miles into the Asian and North American continents. It is believed that there were very few trees and all vegetation consisted of grasses and low-lying plants and shrubs. Today, the region surrounding what remains of Beringia in northwestern Alaska and eastern Siberia still features grasslands with very few trees. The fauna of the Bering Land Bridge consisted mainly of large and small ungulates adapted to grassland environments. In addition, fossils indicate that species such as saber-toothed cats, woolly mammoths, and other large and small mammals were present on the Bering Land Bridge as well. It is also believed that when the Bering Land Bridge began to flood with rising sea levels during the end of the last ice age, these animals moved south into what is today the main North American continent. Human Evolution One of the most important things about the Bering Land Bridge is that it enabled humans to cross the Bering Sea and enter North America during the last ice age about 12,000 years ago. It is believed that these early settlers were following migrating mammals across the Bering Land Bridge and for a time may have settled on the bridge itself. As the Bering Land Bridge began to flood once again with the end of the ice age, however, humans and the animals they were following moved south along coastal North America. Corium and Radioactivity After the Chernobyl Nuclear Meltdown

The most dangerous radioactive waste in the world is likely the Elephants Foot, the name given to the solid flow from the nuclear meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on April 26, 1986. The accident occurred during a routine test when a power surge triggered an emergency shutdown that didnt go as planned. Chernobyl The core temperature of the reactor rose, causing an even greater power surge, and the control rods that might otherwise have managed the reaction were inserted too late to help. The heat and power rose to the point where the water used to cool the reactor vaporized, generating pressure that blew the reactor assembly apart in a powerful explosion. With no means to cool the reaction, the temperature ran out of control. A second explosion threw part of the radioactive core into the air, showering the area with radiation and starting fires. The core began to melt, producing a material resembling hot lava—except that it was also wildly radioactive. As molten sludge oozed through the remaining pipes and melted concrete, it eventually hardened into a mass resembling the foot of an elephant or, to some viewers, Medusa, the monstrous Gorgon from Greek mythology. Elephants Foot The Elephants Foot was discovered by workers in December 1986. It was both physically hot and nuclear-hot, radioactive to the point that approaching it for more than a few seconds constituted a death sentence. Scientists put a camera on a wheel and pushed it out to photograph and study the mass. A few brave souls went out to the mass to take samples for analysis. Corium What researchers discovered was that the Elephants Foot was not, as some had expected, the remnants of the nuclear fuel.  Instead, it was a mass of melted concrete, core shielding, and sand, all mixed together. The material was named corium after the portion of the reactor that produced it.   The Elephants Foot changed over time, puffing out dust, cracking, and decomposing, yet even as it did, it remained too hot for humans to approach. Chemical Composition Scientists analyzed the composition of corium to determine how it formed and the true danger it represents. They learned that the material formed from a series of processes, from the initial melting of the nuclear core into the Zircaloy (a trademarked zirconium alloy) cladding to the mixture with sand and concrete silicates to a final lamination as the lava melted through floors, solidifying. Corium is essentially a heterogeneous silicate glass containing inclusions: uranium oxides (from the fuel pellets)uranium oxides with zirconium (from the melting of the core into the cladding)zirconium oxides with uraniumzirconium-uranium oxide (Zr- U-O)zirconium silicate with up to 10% uranium [(Zr,U)SiO4, which is called chernobylite]calcium aluminosilicatesmetalsmaller amounts of sodium oxide and magnesium oxide If you were to look at the corium, youd see black and brown ceramic, slag, pumice, and metal. Is It Still Hot? The nature of radioisotopes is that they decay into more stable isotopes over time. However, the decay scheme for some elements might be slow, plus the daughter, or product, of decay might also be radioactive. The corium of the Elephants Foot was considerably lower 10 years after the accident but still insanely dangerous. At the 10-year point, radiation from the corium was down to 1/10th its initial value, but the mass remained physically hot enough and emitted enough radiation that 500 seconds of exposure would produce radiation sickness and about an hour was lethal. The intention was to contain the Elephants Foot by 2015 in an effort to diminish its environmental threat level. However, such containment doesnt make it safe. The corium of the Elephants Foot might not be as active as it was, but its still generating heat and still melting down into the base of Chernobyl. Should it manage to find water, another explosion could result. Even if no explosion occurred, the reaction would contaminate the water. The Elephants Foot will cool over time, but it will remain radioactive and (if you were able to touch it) warm for centuries to come. Other Sources of Corium Chernobyl isnt the only nuclear accident to produce corium. Gray corium with patches of yellow also formed in partial meltdowns at Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in the U.S. in March 1979 and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan in March 2011. Glass produced from atomic tests, such as trinitite, is similar.

Essay on Wuthering Heights Conflict Analysis - 994 Words

In Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontà «, revenge is one of the most prominent themes within the novel. This theme plays into a recurring literary theme of the war between passion and responsibility, seen specifically within Brontà «Ã¢â‚¬â„¢s character Heathcliff. In this case, Heathcliff’s passion is his overwhelming desire for revenge on the Earnshaw and Linton families in order to gain what he believes is rightfully his. With his mind solely focused on seeking vengeance on those who have hurt him, Heathcliff is unable to maintain the responsibilities of an adult, a father, or even a human being. His desire for revenge is at sometimes so strong that it corrupts his other em otions, including love. The extreme force of his acts of vengeance put so much stress on Catherine that she ends up dying, proving that Heathcliff’s plans of repayment were flawed in that they made him blind to his love and caused him to loose the woman he adores. The intense power of Heathcliff’s hunger for retribution is demonstrated when he states â€Å"while I’m thinking of [the best way to get revenge], I don’t feel pain,† (107) clearly showing how revenge suppresses and strangles all of his other feelings and emotions. Although Heathcliff believes that seeking revenge will justify what he has endured, he ironically makes himself more miserable than Hindley ever did through the process. When Heathcliff says he â€Å"[doesn’t] care how long [he] waits, if [he] can only [get revenge]† (65) on Hindley, Brontà « gives insight on the incredible depth to Heathcliff’s vengeance and the lengths he will go to. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight The Role of Women Essay Example For Students

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: The Role of Women Essay Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: The Role of Women In the fourteenth century, chivalry was in decline due to drastic social and economic changes. Although feudalism-along with chivalry-would eventually fall for other reasons, including a decrease in cheap human resources due to a drop in population caused by plague epidemics and the emergence of a mercantile middle class, the Gawain author perceived a loss of religious values as the cause of its decline. Gawain and the The poem warns that a loss of the religious values behind chivalry would lead to its ultimate destruction. Although superficially Sir Gawain and the Green Knight appears to be a romantic celebration of chivalry, it contains wide-ranging serious criticism of the system. The poet is showing Gawains reliance on chivalrys outside form and substance at the expense of the original values of the Christian religion from which it sprang. The first knights were monastic ones, vowing chastity, poverty and service to God, and undertaking crusades for the good of their faith. The divergence between this early model and the fourteenth century knight came with the rise of courtly love in which the knights were led to their great deeds by devotion to a mistress rather than God. The discrepancy between this and the churchs mistrust of women and desires of the flesh is obvious, and the poet uses women in the story to deliver this message. In contrast to reality at the time, women in the story are given great power: Mary, when properly worshiped, gives Gawain his power, Lady Bertilak operates alone in the bedroom and singlehandedly taints the chevalier, and Morgan the Fay instigates the entire plot, wielding enough power. The author is using them as a metaphor for other anti-social forces and dangers outside the control of feudalism and chivalry, drawing upon biblical and classical examples in his audiences minds of where femininity is linked with subversiveness. Lady Bertilak is clearly seen in the Biblical role of the temptress, the Eve who led Adam astrayin Gawain, she represents the traditional female archetypes of courtly love, disobedience, lust and death. Eves antithesis is the Virgin Mary, who is the only women who achieves motherhood while maintaining her chastity; she represents spiritual love, obedience, chastity, and life That Gawain is Marys Knight is made clear as he is robed for battle; the pentangle represents the five joys of Mary, and he has that queens image / Etched on the inside of his armored shield (648-649). As long as he is solely focused on his quest for the Green Knight, he derives his prowess and courage from his special relationship with Mary. On his journey to look for the Green Knight he is beset by a number of hardships, and is finally brought to the point of despair. Alone and freezing in the forest, he prays to Mary for shelter and a place to say mass on Christmas Eve. She answers his prayers and leads him to Bertilaks castle; however, his arrival at Bertilaks court throws him into a totally different world. Here, Gawain impresses courtiers of Bertilaks castle with his prowess in the field of courtly love rather than the feats of daring or his upholding of his honor, traits that would draw compliments in Arthurs court. Camelot is portrayed in its youth, long before it too is tainted by Lancelot and courtly love; Arthur is young, child-like (86) and the fine fellowship of Camelot was in its fair prime. The analogy is obvious: Arthurs court embodies chivalrys pure roots, where martial exploits were the primary subject of interest, whereas Bertilaks castle represents the low point of the degeneration the poet perceives chivalry to have undergone. Courage of Atticus Finch free essay sample

Atticus Finch, a dedicated lawyer and compassionate father of two, shows many instances of great courage as he fights against racism to ensure justice when an innocent black man is accused of rape in a small southern town. His actions through out the trial, as well as his personal life, each one displaying compassion, courage, and dedication idolized him in many peoples eyes and eventually won him the title of fims number one hero of all time. Buddha defined compassion as that which makes the heart of the good move at the pain of others. † The book of Leviticus expresses it more simply as â€Å"love thy neighbor†. In To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus Finch shows compassion in every aspect of his life; in the upholding of his career, the raising of his children, and his determination to follow his own conscience while facing critique, slander, and threats. Atticus’ compassion for Tom Robinson earned him the hatred of many racist citizens in his small, southern town. When even the children began to hear of Atticus new reputation as a n***** defender Scout asked her father how he could possibly be doing the right thing if it it made everybody so angry. Atticus replied ; â€Å"The one thing that doesnt abide by majority rule is a persons conscience. † Atticus, though an extremely dedicated lawyer, loves nothing more than his children; Jem and Scout Finch. He treats them as equals, allowing them to call him by his first name, and uses reason and compassion, rather than punishment, to help them mature and see their faults. One of his most important lessons was teaching Scout the concepts of compassion and empathy. When she came home angry with her new teacher he asked her to envision life from the teacher’s perspective. â€Å"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. This is a lesson that stuck through Scout all the way through the novel’s conclusion when she faces the neighborhood from Boo Radley’s porch. Winston Churchill has said that â€Å"Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. † Through out the course of The Robinson Trials Atticus displays both forms of these courage; taking on James Wright’s role of the ‘accusing finger’ in the face of his town, and holding on to a remarkable belief in peacefulness and pacifism while facing both verbal and physical attacks. The witnesses for the State, with the exception of the sheriff of Maycomb County have presented themselves to you gentlemen, to this court in the cynical confidence that their testimony would not be doubted, confident that you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption the evil assumption that all Negroes lie, all Negroes are basically immoral beings, all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women. An assumption that one associates with minds of their caliber, and which is, in itself, gentlemen, a lie, which I do not need to point out to you. Atticus Finch’s closing statement on behalf of Tom Robinson. As a white man, standing in front of a jury and an audience of white, southern men Atticus accused the entire town of ign orance and racism, putting his reputation, his life, and, unknowingly, even his children at risk in his desire to speak the truth. â€Å"Dedication is not what others expect of you, it is what you can give to others. † Atticus showed true dedication to his work, not in the pursuit of money, but in the true desire to help his friends and neighors, and bring justice and peace to his small town. Atticus remained faithful to his client, with no concern for his personal reputation or the opinions of his peers. He had dedicated his life to the law, and refused to lose that dedication to appease the ignorance of others. In 2003 Atticus Finch was declared the number one literary and screen hero of all time by The American Film Institutes CBS special. Though Atticus does nothing nearly as dramtic or spectatular as the heroes following him on the list, Indiana Jones and James Bond, his personality is marked by dedication, compassion, and the quiet, everyday courage we all yearn to have.

Integrating Care And Justice Moral Development Essays - Morality

Integrating Care and Justice: Moral Development Matchmaker.com: Sign up now for a free trial. Date Smarter! Integrating Care and Justice: Moral Development Part One: The criticisms of Kohlberg's moral development stages seem to center around three major points, his research methods, the "regression" of stage four, and finally his goals. The first criticism that I would like to address is that of his research methods. Kohlberg is often criticized for not only his subject selection, but also the methods by which he tries to extricate data from those subjects. His initial study consisted of school boys from a private institution in Chicago. The problem with this is fairly obvious, that this does not represent a significant portion of the population to allow for generalized conclusions. In other words, how can we test some boys from Chicago and ascertain that this is how all people develop worldwide? I believe that the answer to this criticism comes from the theory that it relates to. Kohlberg's moral development schema is highly dependent upon the idea that there are fundamental truths that cannot be dismissed. These ideas are "in the ether", wound into the very fabric that constructs human nature. Granted, his descriptions of the various stages also seem very dependent upon the surroundings and social institutions that an individual would be subjected to. Yet these institutions would be have to be built upon people, all of whom would share these ideological truths. It seems fairly obvious that all people have undeniable needs, survival and some group membership. Kohlberg's stages are merely methods by which one could fulfill these needs. For instance, Spartan societies were adamant about maintaining the purity and strength of the civilization. Citizens saw no wrong in exposing a sick or lame baby to the elements so that it might die. Surely an act of cruelty today, but in that society, a necessary evil The prosperity and wealth of the whole was of greater importance than that of the individual. In addition to these justifications, additional research substantiated Kohlberg's claims. Different subjects were tested, from all ages and regions, and the same conclusions were drawn from the data. Assuming that these conclusions are correct, and the data leads to the same interpretation, is there any other possibility? This argument seems most impressive, especially considering the differences between people that are evident in everyday life. Similarities on such an abstract level must be supportive of Kohlberg's claims. Another criticism of Kohlberg assumes that his subjects are biased, but proposes that his methods are even worse. To get the perspective of another person, he confronts them with seemingly impossible, unrealistic, and confrontational dilemmas. I, myself, had trouble with the Heinz dilemma because of my inability to believe that it was something that could take place in the real world. Even more so, the situation was something that was very foreign, and very hard to relate to. Anyone who has contemplated something very life changing, like a death in the family, then experienced it, understands how different it is to actually be faced with the dilemma. When theorizing, it is hard to maintain the intimate connection needed to truly react to a moral dilemma. My defense of this situation comes from a lack of a suitable alternative. True moral dilemmas are not only rare, but extremely hard to document. When faced with a situation that demands not only one's complete attention, but emotional vigor, it is really hard to find time to document or discuss feelings (let alone the motivation to do so!). For example, looking at the Heinz dilemma, it would be very hard to explain why one was chasing a man around while he tried to find a cure for his dying wife. An even less enticing alternative would be trying to sit him down and discuss how he was feeling. So, the only proper and effective way to get a response is to propose a hypothetical situation, and document replies. It may not elicit the pure data that one desires, but according to the Heisenberg principle, it is impossible to measure anything without influencing it. Some research methods indicate that it is more important to follow one's thoughts through the reasoning process, rather than just asking for possible solutions. However, I have to believe, and justify from personal experience, that people have incredibly low attention spans. Asking someone to explain how they think through a decision is almost as likely to yield useful data as asking them to volunteer their PIN numbers. It seems as though people are able not only to be influenced, but to influence themselves into making different decisions. This can

MA in Directed Writing - 6 Things You Should Not Do

MA in Directed Writing - 6 Things You Should Not DoThe most successful students, in writing, will always look for an MA in Directed Writing on the internet, but that does not mean that the quality of the subject matter and the writing skills should also be the same. One needs to write very differently to someone else in order to achieve a better outcome. In this article I want to cover some of the more common mistakes made when reading MA in Directed Writing samples, as well as why these mistakes are often made.First of all, when looking at an essay, you should always read it from the point of view of the reader. When you read the MA in Directed Writing sample for example, you should always be focused on the opinion of the writer, not just the opinions of the professor. A student may claim to be a professional writer, but what they actually are is an opinion writer. Their words will reflect their opinions and not those of the reader.Second, when reading an essay, you should always se ek out a deeper meaning. When a student claims to have a deep understanding of their topic, they are actually just delivering their opinion, not speaking from a real situation or point of view. You have to read the piece from their perspective, rather than the viewpoint of the student. Students will often state that their opinions are deeply held, but only those that they are willing to speak from a very real situation or position will experience it. The opinions of others, and those that simply describe the writer's position, are often more shallow than the deep-rooted beliefs of the author.Third, there should always be a deep understanding of the main point of the essay. When writing an essay, students should strive to understand the main concept behind the thesis statement, and then build their argument around that idea. This will allow the reader to feel as though they are actually part of the essay, rather than an observer.Fourth, the main points of an essay should be researche d carefully. If the essay is heavily based upon factual errors, it is important that you seek out the original sources in order to provide your reader with the best possible reading experience.Fifth, it is important that the students provide their readers with a feeling of a personal experience. While you are writing a speech, an essay, or a report, the goal is to tell the reader what you personally felt at the time. The essay should not be completely detached and provide no personal experiences that you were able to relate to.Sixth, even essays and reports, when they are written with a sense of humor, should always be able to be labeled as a true story. While all writers are aware that writing an essay is difficult, and indeed, writing a report can be a challenge, there are many different styles and tones that should be considered. The same rules should be applied to these essays, even if they are categorized as true stories. These six tips will help you when writing an essay and gi ve you the ability to write an essay that will be more successful. It will also make you realize that all essays are not created equal and should be treated as such.

Is Your Job Exempt From Overtime Pay

Is Your Job Exempt From Overtime Pay Are you wondering if you’re exempt from overtime pay? Thanks to the U.S. Labor Department and President Obama, there is a new overtime pay threshold for people working more than 40 hours per week.  By the current rule,   you would only be eligible for guaranteed time-and-a-half overtime pay if you made less than $23,660 per year. The new threshold is much higher: $47, 476 per year. This is part of a planned Fair Labor Standards Act update, the details of which have been in the works since 2014. Previous regulations made most white collar workers making a set salary, even a low one, ineligible for overtime pay.To quote the President, â€Å"It doesn’t make sense that in some cases this rule actually makes it possible for salaried workers to be paid less than the minimum wage†¦ If you’re working hard, you’re barely making ends meet, you should be paid for overtime. Period.†The only catch is that your employer might be reluctant to shell out. B e on the lookout for a pay raise that puts you at, say, $47,477 per year. Or a pay cut to compensate for the amount of overtime you would be making. As long as you’re making the state-regulated minimum wage, there’s nothing legally you can do to counter that sort of sneaky move. But, look on the bright side! Starting December 1 of this year, if you make less than $913 a week before tax, your employer is legally required to start paying you time-and-a-half overtime for any hour you work above 40. This rule will be due for an update again in 2020.Here’s hoping for more overtime protection for more workers, this year and in the future.

Academic Journal Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Academic Journal - Article Example On the other hand, the US Commercial Services identifies Saudi Arabia as the country with the fastest growing market in terms of security equipment and technology, especially surveillance cameras, consequently accounting for 12% of the world’s security equipments sales (qtd. in Alhadar and McCahill 317). With a look into the operations of surveillance camera system in Crescent Mall in Riyadh, this article addresses fundamental questions arising from the use of this technology in Riyadh and largely in Saudi Arabia. As noted by Marx, current surveillance â€Å"monitors not individual suspects, but geographical places, time periods and entire categories of persons† (qtd. in Alhadar and McCahill 325). However, this new surveillance takes a different perspective once religion and social morals take centre stage as proved Crescent Mall in Riyadh. In this regard, the main target of surveillance becomes men suspected of courting women instead of drug users and other social deviants in a western-like surveillance set-up. In addition, there is a theocratic approach when the surveillance targets those who do not attend prayers. Cultural norms and traditions shaped the response of the security systems in the mall. Case in point, a patrol security officer once directed by the surveillance operator to two elderly women sitting on the floor failed to take action on them since as Alhadar and McCahill noted, â€Å"Saudi cultural norms dictate that elderly people should be treated with respect and consideration† (322). In this case, traditional beliefs played an integral role regarding carrying out of surveillance. On the other hand, the attitudes of the observers played a crucial role in monitoring visitors at the mall especially the women who wore veils. The attitudes are of crucial importance since wearing veils did not prevent women from talking and interacting with men who were not their kin as the Saudi traditions and values

Complex Interdependence According To Nye and Keohane Assignment

Complex Interdependence According To Nye and Keohane - Assignment Example The two authors argued that bilateral relationships between French vs. German and U.S vs. Canadian determined the three hypothetical characteristics of complex interdependence. Nye and Keohane argued that the concept of complex interdependence in the 1970s emanated from international monetary relations. In this context, the significance of international organizations would therefore change. According to them, the concept of complex interdependence would change global politics. This would derive from the assertion that state policies and processes would have different objectives and instruments. Indeed, under complex interdependence, global politics would be universal where economic, environmental, and social globalism levels would increase as military globalism reduces. Keohane and Nye think that the concept of complex interdependence will lead to a reduction of military globalism since powerful nations with reliable expectations will not use force to solve global differences. More so, the politics of complex interdependence would be universal and hence limited chances of military globalism. Regional powers with reliable needs will desist from using force to solve global conflicts. In addition, world powers like the U.S facilitated and funded the establishment of postwar international institutions like IMF, UN, World Bank, and NATO that safeguarded and promoted the concept of complex interdependence. Moreover, the rise in economic, environmental, and social globalism levels would motivate world leaders in pluralist democracies to solve territorial disputes out of fear of economic and social development distractions that would deny such democracies significant investment capital.

How Europeans Affected the Indians Essay Example for Free

How Europeans Affected the Indians Essay The arrival of the Europeans affected the Indians in several different ways. The Indians were exposed to new experiences such as diseases, religion, racism, land ownership, and trade to name a few. The Indians way of life changed forever with the arrival of the European colonists. Diseases were introduced to them as early as 1550 by European fisherman who stayed on the New England shores during the winter. The fisherman brought devastating illnesses which the Indians had little resistance to such as diphtheria, cholera, typhus, measles, and small pox. The coastal Indians were the first infected by these aliments and in turn, they spread them to the inland Indians. These diseases were ruinous and cost many Indians their lives. The Indians had their own customs and religions. They were introduced to the colonist’s religion, Protestant Christianity. They did not immediately take to the Puritan religion as the Indians took to Catholicism brought in by the Spaniards. They found it difficult to embrace a religion that taught that all but a few of them were damned to hellfire. Also, the Puritan or Anglican religion was complicated with English ways of eating, dressing, working, and looking at the world. The Indians that did embrace the Protestant religion were forced to adhere to the Protestant ways and abandoned their own. The Indian men were to farm and the women to weave, they lived in English houses and not wigwams, they were to barber their hair as the Puritans, and they were to stop using bear grease toward off mosquitoes. Racism was introduced to the Indians by the English colonists. Before the colonist’s arrival, they knew nothing of prejudice. Captives were adopted into the tribe, white prisoners as well as Indians born into another tribe. They were fully accepted as their brothers and sisters. Tribes would even raid other tribes and white settlements in order to increase their numbers. Extramarital miscegenation produced â€Å"half-breeds† which were consigned to the Indians. This was done in part because they were illegitimate, but mostly because of the consciousness of race that steadily grew in intensity in the colonial societies. The English referred to the Indians as savages because they were racially inferior. They abhorred their culture, morals, manners, and religion. They thought of all Indians as enemies. The Indians  were exposed to this narrow mindedness and bigotry which had been made by the colonist and so they learned of racism. The colonists assumed possession of lands that were vacated, like the site of Plymouth, on the justification of ancient legal principle that unoccupied land is anybody’s picking. The colonists did acknowledge the legal and moral rights of the tribes to own land they occupied and purchased what they could of it. The problem was that when the Indians sold land to the colonists, their understanding was that they were then willing to share their hunting grounds with them, just as they would with other tribes. They did not understand the concept of ownership. This was not a practice in which they had ever been exposed. This misunderstanding between the Indians and colonists caused wars between them which were inevitably won by the colonists. The Indians way of life was not suitable to live where the English lived due to the colonist’s agricultural ways. The Indians farmed by borrowing fields from the forest. They cultivated the soil for a few years and then moved elsewhere. The fields then reverted to hunting grounds. But the colonists did not allow this to happen. They destroyed the forests for hundreds of acres. They farmed these fields until the soil was depleted. Then they would turn the fields into pastures for their livestock. The livestock would renew the soil after several years. But during this time, the colonists would clear more hundreds of acres for their farming. This caused the flight of wildlife and game, which was vital to the Indians way of life. The Indians were anxious to trade with the colonists. They would trade furs for such things as beef, baubles, vessels, tools, iron tomahawks, woven wool blankets, liquor, and muskets. In order to trade with the Europeans, the Indians hunted and trapped for the hides of deer and the furs of other animals which the colonists wanted. Competition for furs between the tribes introduced a vicious kind of war between the Indians. The fur trade also resulted in the destruction of the ecological system of the area. Before fur trading with the Europeans, the tribes killed only moose, deer, beaver, and the other animals which were necessary and they had an immediate need. But with the need for more hides and furs, the Indians hunted until they had extinguished all the animals in their hunting grounds. The Indians then went into other tribes’ territories to hunt which in turn caused warfare between them. Another problem with trading with the colonists arose out of the Indians want of the liquor which the colonists provided. They took to the intoxicating effects of the liquor which in turn caused new problems within the tribes and with the people of the tribes. The colonist’s actions also caused another first for the Indians. The hanging of three Wampanoag’s at Plymouth for murdering Sassamon, a â€Å"praying Indian† caused the first pan-Indian attempt to preserve traditional culture. Metacomet, called King Phillip by the New Englanders, was the one to convince the other tribes to work together as he saw that the colonists with their ever increasing numbers were destroying the Indians way of life. Slavery was the involuntary capture of human beings who were sold and then owned by their masters. They were forced to work for their entire lives. Slaves had no personal rights and no hope of freedom. Slavery was first notable in the southern colonies. At first, colonists saw the indentured servants as better investments than spending money on the slaves. Later, they realized that the slaves seem to have a built up immunity to certain diseases such as malaria, which often killed the indentured servants in their care. The colonists came to see the slaves as an investment, worth the money for the outcome of a lifelong worker who could do manual labor, did not have to be replaced after a specific number of years of service, and also could assist in bearing children born into slavery which only would increase the master’s workforce. Eventually, all of the colonies became involved in owning slaves. Indentured servitude was an adaptation of the well established English means of training boys to be artisans and caring for orphans. Fathers would sign an indenture with a master of a craft. This bound the boy to the master for a period of years, usually seven years. In return for his labor, the master agreed to shelter, clothe, and feed his apprentice and teach him the craft. This institution of indentured servitude was also used to provide for orphans. Indentured servants were well suited for farmers who needed  laborers. People were recruited in England to sign indentures to work in the colonies as servants for an agreed number of years. In return for signing the indentures, the servant’s passage across the Atlantic was paid. Some servant’s were forced by English courts which sentenced convicts to transportation to the colonies. There they served out their sentences as bound servants. Unlike slaves, the indentured servants had personal rights. The term of the servitude was written down which varied from three to seven years. At the end of the agreed time, they were freed. They were given clothing, tools, a little money, and sometimes land.

Many of these initial efforts began as simple export schemes to sell goods overseas to supplement domestic sales. Over time, however, international operations have become increasingly more complex: from joint-ventures to purchasing existing foreign firms to ‘green-field’ start-ups. While export operations usually require no more than extended business trips overseas, more complex international operations demand long-term assignments of key personnel outside their home-country. What would normally be considered routine business transactions in the home country can become very complicated when they are conducted between individuals and organizations from different cultures. In this essay we will examine how this cultural gap can affect international business and joint ventures. What is culture? The word 'culture' is often described in terms of concrete ideas or social artifacts. Gary R. Weaver describes some common conceptions such as "good taste," "art or music," or "something that people in exotic foreign lands had."1 However, culture in the context of international assignments relates to how people perceive the world and the influence this perception has on their actions. It is culture on the interpersonal level. Different cultures can perceive the same thing differently, which leads to miscommunication and misunderstanding when one crosses into another culture not their own. Proportioning of Concrete Ingredients and Mixes

Ingredients for concrete are cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and water. The best concrete can be obtained by mixing the ingredients in correct proportions. The ideal proportion of concrete will be that, which produces greatest strength and solidity at the least cost. In estimating the quantities of ingredients for cement concrete it should keep in mind that voids of coarse aggregates are filled up by sand and voids of fine aggregates are filled up by cement. The concrete mix of 1: 1: 2 and 1: 11/2: 3 are mostly used for water retaining structures. The concrete mix 1: 2: 4 is most commonly used for R. C. C. construction. The mix proportion of 1: 3: 6 and 1: 4: 8 are used in lean concrete works. The concept behind the proportioning of concrete mixes is that the resulting concrete is densest and strongest with least amount of cement. Following are the methods of proportioning concrete: †¢Arbitrary Standard Method. The concept of this method is that fine aggregate should be sufficient in the mix to fill the voids of coarse aggregate and quantity of cement is just sufficient to fill the voids of the fine aggregate.By experiments and experience, it is seen that ratio of fine aggregate and coarse aggregate to develop a dense mix lies between 1: 11/2 and 1: 21/2. Similarly, amount of cement, required to fill the voids of fine aggregate is ascertained. Based on experience and experiments, it is possible to fix arbitrary ratios of cement, F. A. and C. A. in forms of 1: n: 2n. †¢Minimum Voids Method. In this method of proportioning, the voids in F. A. and C. A. are found out the separately with the help of graduated cylinder and water. After finding the voids, cement and F. A. are so proportioned that they are slightly more in volume than the voids in F. A. and C. A. , respectively. Cement is normally taken 10% more and F. A. about 15% more than the percentage of voids in F. A. and C. A. Sufficient water is added to the mix, so obtained to make the mix wo rkable. This method does not give satisfactory results because presence of water, in sand and cement separates the constituents of coarse aggregate, thereby increasing the voids. In this method of proportioning no consideration is given to the grading of the aggregate which is very important concept in concrete technology. Hence, concrete designed by this method does not give the highest strength. †¢W/c Ratio. W/c ratio law states that the strength of well compacted concrete with good workabity is dependent only on w/c ratio. In addition to other factors like grading and proportioning of aggregates, proportion of cement, the workability of concrete also depends upon the quantity of water used in the mixture. ?
